With a string of Winter Masters Exhibitions that have wowed the masses, the National Gallery of Victoria embarked on an ambitious Summer blockbuster, Melbourne Now. A survey of Melbourne with its artists and creators of current note and influence. Taking vast swathes of both the NGV St Kilda Road and the NGV (Ian Potter) Federation Square floor space, its was set to inform and astound. After devoting a whole day of our summer holidays to explore it soon became apparent that this wasn't going to be that "All this and a bag of chips" brilliant excursion that we had anticipated. A handful of great things became weighed down by a swag of mediocre fill.
Clean up your room……..oops its an installation. Really.
Oh the irony……a shop.
In the end we sought refuge within the gallery of 17 century painings and after half an hour felt restored from the disappointment of the dross and the annoyance of the creche installations.
Needless to say, we didn't think much of this grand exercise.
Officially grumpy old men.
